Sleep Apnea & Snoring
Snoring & sleep apnea
Helping patients breathe during sleep
Every night, sleep apnea causes more than 18 million Americans to snore and stop breathing periodically during their sleep. Sleep apnea “episodes” can cause involuntarily breathing cessation for 10 to 60 seconds up to 100 times an hour or more while the person sleeps. Yet despite the presence of clear signs and symptoms – and despite seeing family physicians – some 80% to 90% of those with the disorder remain undiagnosed for an average of seven years.
The good news? Dr. Margaret E. Mike offers quality testing and a customized plan for sleep apnea patients. She has multiple board certifications and over two decades of experience in sleep medicine, so you know you’re getting care you can trust.
Obstructive sleep apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by loud snoring with periods during which the snoring stops for 10 to 60 seconds, followed by a loud snore or snort. Sleep apnea is the quiet period during which the individual stops breathing. Every time this occurs, the person arouses very briefly before returning to sleep. This sleep disorder can cause excessive daytime sleepiness, which may affect performance. Obstructive sleep apnea is considered a serious medical problem, and medical care should be sought as soon as possible.
Conditions linked to sleep apnea
Sleep apnea can cause fatigue, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, frequent urination at night and memory problems. What’s more, sleep apnea is a debilitating breathing disorder that has far-reaching effects on health. It has been linked to high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, diabetes and heart failure. In fact, about half of patients with high blood pressure also have sleep apnea.
Addressing sleep apnea
If your sleep study results indicate that you have sleep apnea, Dr. Mike will likely prescribe the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device. When you have received sleep apnea treatment, you will experience numerous benefits.
In addition, eliminating snoring and occurrences of sleep apnea episodes will dramatically improve your quality of sleep and control excessive daytime sleepiness. You will be more alert during the day, allowing you to perform better at work and other activities. Increased alertness will reduce the likelihood that you will be involved in a work- or auto-related injury.
